According to sources, the Toronto Blue Jays promoted their top prospect Nick Castellanos which was expected to occur shortly after May 1st. The Blue Jays designated RP Mitchell Boggs, SP James McDonald and 3B Eric Chavez to make salary room and space for Castellanos. Eric Chavez was signed during the offseason as a stopgap at third base until Castellanos became eligible. Castellanos, while also having outfield eligibility, will take over the duties at the hot corner for the foreseeable future.
"This is an exciting day" GM Silvio Sansano said after the official move. "We've been wanting to call up Castellanos and we feel that this was the perfect time to do. We're hoping that his bat gives our lineup a nice boost, which has been struggling in the power department as of late."
The Blue Jays lineup has struggled throughout the early part of the season, however the team sits in second place in the tough AL East division and holds a spot for the second wild card spot. Players like Eric Hosmer, Billy Butler and recent FA signing Curtis Granderson have disappointed during the first month of April.
"We couldn't afford to hold out any longer," said the GM. "Games in the month of April and May are as important as games down the stretch."
The Jays are hoping that Nick Castellanos could provide the extra boost this lineup needs.
